The 1999 Maggie Awards:
As I've noted in the past, Alara's Magneto Page is not a terribly exclusive site. I try to archive or link to every Magneto story on the net, unless it's bad enough to belong in the Hall of Shame. So stories which are actually of higher than average quality have had nothing to set them aside, until now.
Rather than use my personal opinions only, I recruited volunteers on the Magneto Mailing List to help me out with the Maggie Awards for high-quality Magneto fanfic. The purpose of the awards is to highlight what we, the panelists, think you'd enjoy reading. The way we picked the awards was this: each panelist gave 1, 2 or 3 points to a story they liked. The points were added up for four panelists. No panelist was allowed to vote for her own stories.
I've named the award levels after the electromagnetic spectrum:
One Point: Visible Light Award
If a story has a Visible Light Award, one panelist liked it enough to give it a point. Consider this an honorable mention.
Two - Five Points: Ultraviolet Award
Six - Eight Points: X-Ray Award
Nine - Eleven Points: Gamma Ray Award
Twelve Points: nobody got this, and that's good, because I think I'm out of the spectrum :-)
The panelists were me, Dandelion, Sigil, and Carrie. Brief descriptions of why the panelist voted for the story have been inserted for some stories. To be precise, Sigil and Carrie did their writeups and Dandelion and I had no time to. I hope to have time to insert my own brief descriptions of why I voted for stories over time; Dande, I hope, will do the same if she ever gets the time, but her life seems to be as hectic as mine. :-)
Stories were eligible through the December update. Stories added in 1999 were not considered for the 1999 awards; next year we'll have to do this again! :-) In 2000 any Unfinished story will be considered for awards again, but stories which are now finished will not be.

XXY Universe. A day in the life of the Mutant Menace, the counterpart to the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in the XXY genderswap universe. This story will probably make no sense if you don't visit the XXY page first. "Polaris" is the XXY version of Magneto.
- XXY Universe has interesting potential, story is well-written and entertaining. Interesting to see the similarities and differences between Polaris and "our" Magneto. Excellent choice for the POV.
The Bloody Morning After: Written by Rebecca Teed, archived by Rebecca Teed. Unfinished. Main Character Story.

Charles Xavier is rescued by the X-Men from his captivity by Bastion, but he appears to be broken inside. It would spoil things to reveal Magneto's role, but he's in it, trust me.
- This story has an epic feel, incorporating deep characterisation, violent battles and clever plotting.
Crimes of the Heart: By Indigo. Archived by Indigo. Secondary Character Story.
Storm returns to Antarctica to rescue Remy post UXM #350, while the X-Men try to get on with their lives... until a much greater threat draws them all back together. Joseph is an important secondary character in this story.
- I eagerly anticipated the next chapters of this.
A Day's Work: By Tilman Stieve. Archived by Alykat. Tales of the Twilight Menshevik series. Secondary Character Story.
A conference on metahumans in Europe draws all sorts of folks. Magneto is just one character in this large cast.
- See? New York isn't the centre of the world. The unusual format is entertaining in itself, and the author's vision of the Marvel Universe is unparalleled in fanfic; the Magneto section, however, was the one part I disliked.
- Characters are handled with sophistication, the story is written quite well, and includes much Deep Conversation that manages not to be stifling.
The Death of a Dream: By Onyx. Archived by Onyx. Secondary Character Story.
Two years ago all the telepaths were killed and most of the X-Men fell in battle to the Shadow King, possessing Magneto's body. Rogue, who sold her soul for the ability to control her power, and Gambit, who seeks redemption by working with the remains of the X-Men to infiltrate the Shadow King's Brotherhood, are the main characters in this story. Magneto has been kind of amalgamated into the Shadow King, and counts as the villain, sort of.
Denouement: By Kielle. Archived by Darqstar. Secondary Character Story.

Drawn to the Lodestone Rock: By Dandelion. Archived by Darqstar. Main Character Story.

- Lots of fun without ever forgetting the troubles of these fully-rounded characters.
The Experiment #713 series: By Lori McDonald. Archived by Darqstar. Magneto appears in the stories "The Gift" and "Ash"; however, you really should read the whole thing from the beginning on, as a. it's very good b. it won't make sense if you don't. Not All Parts.
A mutant experiment of Sinister's escapes and takes up residence in the Morlock tunnels, too frightened to come out into the light or accept the X-Men's friendship. The series follows his slow path back to recovery.
- A superb story arc, based on an intriguing and comprehensively explored premise.

Magneto is having a bad Halloween. Humor. Includes a South Park crossover. Guess how Kenny will die!
Funky Attractions by Funky M. Archived by Alara Rogers. Main Character Story.

- A lovely little sketch of an idea that rings with truth.
How Did Magneto Knock Up Rogue?: By Abyss. Archived by Alara Rogers. Main Character Story.
A silly post from racmx. The Chef from South Park explains the existence of Baby Charles, musically. Humor.
Lights In the Dark: By Tilman Stieve. Archived by Alykat. Tales of the Twilight Menshevik series. Main Character Story.
Another in the series. Various mutants celebrate Hanukah/Christmas.
- These stories are in a genre (romance) that normally provokes a narrowing of focus, but in this case is only the starting point for a grand tour of the fascinating world that we should really be seeing in the comics. I sometimes find the romantic resolutions a little trite and overly neat, but this is a minor quibble.
- Characters are handled with sophistication, the story is written quite well, and includes much Deep Conversation that manages not to be stifling.
A Match Made...? By Jaelle and Orla. Archived by Pirat. Main Character Story.
An alternate version of Rogue and Joseph's first meeting up with other superheroes. Humor.
- Light romantic comedy... not that there's anything wrong with that. The perfect antidote to the millions of "Rogue and Remy overcome the evil Joseph and get together" stories out there.
The Mother Of All Retcons by Alara Rogers. Archived by Alara Rogers. Secondary Character.
A pregnant Lorna Dane escapes from Sinister and flees smack into the middle of an enormous plot complication. Humor. Magneto's appearance is small.
- Horrifying possibility, entirely too plausible, funny, well-written.
Neon Hearts: By Susan Crites. Archived by Ro. Unfinished. Secondary Character Story.
A romance between Hank and a new character named Cassie. Joseph appears around chp. 32 or so, and is much better handled than in Marvel's stuff.
- It's a novel, not a story, and a rich treat like chocolate.
Not With A Bang by Lori McDonald. Archived by Lori McDonald. Secondary Character Story.
Billions of people ceased to exist when the Age of Apocalypse ended. Now, their spirits want closure. Joseph and the ghost of the AOA Magneto both appear in this story. Follow the links to X-Men: One-Shots.
- This really rounded off the AOA for me, with its compassionate sorrow in the face of violent tragedy.
Of Moons And Men by Jaya Mitai. Archived by Alara Rogers. Main Character.
A sequel to "Happy Hanukah." Magda must try to save her marriage, and her husband's soul.
Onslaught: Redemption: By Swpwarrior. Archived by Ro. Secondary Character Story.

A Pound of Flesh by Indigo. Archived by Indigo. Secondary Character Story. Unfinished.
Sequel to "Crimes of the Heart." Joseph is a character in this story.
- I eagerly anticipated the next chapters of this.
Powderkeg by Alara Rogers. Archived by Alara Rogers. Alternate Magneto.
POWER SWAP CHALLENGE. Suppose it had been Magda, not Erik, who had the powers?
- A dark little story which really shook up my assumptions about the relation between mutant powers and personality formation, not to mention acceptable behaviour from a certain character. Highly thought-provoking.
Preludes: By Alicia Curtis. Archived by Alara Rogers. Main Character Story.
In the wake of Magda's abandonment, Erik Lehnsherr seeks a damning form of solace.
- A small portrait of human weakness in inhuman times.
- Love Magneto's reactions here, and state of mind, but little plot to entertain, and rather short.
Resolutions: By Kielle. Archived by Darqstar.
Remy finally insists on hashing out with Rogue where he and she stand vis-a-vis the Joseph situation. Humor.
- Two (this and Denouement) evil little stories that are cringingly funny.

You think Joseph is bad? It could be worse... much, much worse.
- Hilarious, if more than a bit tragic.
The Savage Land Saga: Written by Chris Delaney, archived by Darqstar. Also archived at the X-Writers' archive site at http://coyote.accessnv.com/lia/archive/, but it spanned several "books"; at Darqstar's site the whole thing is sorted into correct chronological order, with notes from Chris.
The Shadow King has taken over Magneto's mindless body, and with the rest of the X-Men gone offworld, it's up to Professor X, Jean Grey and Wolverine to stop him... and they get trashed in the first chapter. Not rated, but contains violence and a lot of disturbing stuff. Not for kiddies.
Scars: By Ruby Lis. Archived by Alykat. The sequel to "End of Innocence." Magneto only appears in "Scars", but that will make little sense if you don't read "End of Innocence" first. Not All Parts.
After Gambit is left for months in a Genoshan concentration camp, Rogue and the X-Men attempt to help him recover, with the aid of Erik Lehnsherr's experience. Contains mature themes.
- Perhaps too much trauma (for characters and readers) is hung on too slender a plot, but still a good read.
- Wonderful insight into the mental/emotional trauma of concentration camp victim. Present-tense writing is somewhat unwieldy, however.
Steel Aurora: By Jenn The Ice Raptoress. Archived by Alara Rogers. Main Character Story.
A human woman who befriends a mutant girl becomes obsessed with Magneto. Adult, includes graphic heterosexual sex between two consenting adults. Follow links through Adult page.
- A slow and rather beautiful piece.
The Time The Twain Shall Meet: By Tilman Stieve. Archived by Alykat. Tales of the Twilight Menshevik series. Secondary Character Story.
Sequel to "A Day's Work." Hawk, Dove and a few other DC characters end up in the Marvel universe. Again, a cast of many, one of which is Magneto, who is having a relationship with Rogue. Mature themes.
Tombstone: by Kaylee. Archived by Northlight. Main Character.
A man visits an old friend's grave.
- Devastating sorrow and helplessness in a spare style that makes it all real.
Tug O'War by Dandelion. Archived by Alara Rogers. Main Character.
Magneto is guest star on a game show where opposing deities compete to win mortals' souls. Humor.
Twilight: by Chris Delaney. Archived by Alara Rogers. Main Character?
An old man is confronted by a young woman about his actions at the end of the war. Either Magneto's the main character or a secondary character, but you'll just have to read it and decide for yourself...
Twin Poles: By Alara Rogers. Archived by Alara Rogers. Series. Unfinished. Main Character Story.
Joseph is an amnesiac X-Man struggling with the distrust of his teammates, and guilt over the terrorist past he's been told about but cannot remember. Magnus is a former Nazi hunter recovering from a mindwipe that's taken several years of his life from him, and he, too, is struggling with the guilt of a terrorist past he cannot remember. One of them is Magneto... and the other is not. But with the stakes their very souls, can either of them believe in, or learn to trust, the other? And can the world afford for them not to?
Uncanny X-Men: Issue 330: Written by Andrew Wheeler.
Magneto, dying of the Legacy Virus, comes to Westchester to confront Charles Xavier.
X-Men/Wacky Races Amalgam: By Innocent Bystander and Masked Goon. Archived by Phil Foster. Secondary Character Story.
The title explains it all. Funny even if you barely remember Wacky Races. Magneto's role is very small, but memorable.
- A marvellous, mirthful mockery of motorised mutants. Read it out loud.
Yishuv: By Arthur-Trevor D. M. Lasher. Archived by Darqstar. Unfinished. Main Character Story.
Set in the same universe as the In-Between Days series, but ten years later, this is the story of Magneto's struggle to create a mutant homeland through (mostly) above-board political means.
Your Way: By Samy Merchi. Archived by Samy Merchi. Main Character Story.
Lee Forrester is murdered. Magneto investigates, and X-Force, hearing of the situation, move to intercept before things get ugly...
- This writer _knows_ the New Mutants, and the story is both dramatic and entertaining.
X-Ray:
Aeneid X: By Coda. Archived by Coda. Main Character Story.
A retelling of a scene from the Aeneid, with Magneto as Aeneas and Storm as Dido.
Body And Soul: The Body Snatcher by Alara Rogers. Archived by Alara Rogers. Main Character Story. Adult. Series. Unfinished.
A new series by me, rated adult for rape, violence, and mature themes. Not erotica, not by any means. Magneto is captured by a serial killer who steals his body. Powerless, he must use all his wits, as well as survival skills he thought left behind in Auschwitz, to stay alive. But the final cost of freedom may be more than he's willing to pay...
- An extremely confronting, compelling and horrific story which Magneto's self is torn apart in full view of the reader. Take the disclaimer seriously.
- Absolutely mind-blowing. Magneto forced to abandon his pride, reverting to survival methods learned in Auschwitz....amazing.
Cellmates by Falstaff. Archived by Indigo. Main Character.
Operation: Zero Tolerance has inflicted a new and terrible torture on Magneto and Cyclops: locking them in a cell together.
- A character-driven piece that is odd, but thorough in its brevity.
Genetic Superiority, World Domination, and A Double Chocolate Mocha Latte to Go, Please by Matt Nute. Archived by Alara Rogers. Main Character.
Magneto has invited Wanda and Pietro to a family reunion... at Starbucks. Humor.
- Wanda and Pietro appear surprisingly infrequently in Magneto stories, but here they (and their dad) are written with compassion and gentle humour.
Habits: By Alara Rogers. Archived by Alara Rogers. Main Character Story.
Occurs between UXM #196 and 199. With the rest of the X-Men out of the house, Kitty decides to investigate Magneto's chambers for anything suspicious, and encounters the dread danger of... rye bread.
- Remember Kitty and Magneto's friendship? Superb characterisation and the fun of a very young and adventurous Sprite.
- Interaction between Magneto and Kitty Pryde--shared heritage, bonding, and interesting implications of the lasting effects of Auschwitz on Mags' psyche. Great balance of suspicion/discomfort/interest coming from Kitty.
Late Summer Interlude: by Tilman Stieve. Archived by Alykat. Tales of the Twilight Menshevik series. Main Character Story.
A romantic interlude between Magneto and Rogue. Contains reasonably graphic m/f sex. Follow links through Adult page.
Magneto's Cold by Lori McDonald. Archived by Alara Rogers. Main Character Story.
Magneto has a cold. Humor.
- Light, funny and a strangely familiar situation.
Midnight Sun by Tilman Stieve. Archived by Alykat. Main Character Story. Adult.
Tilman's "between panels" expansion of the Savage Land arc in UXM #269, 274 and 275. Contains reasonably graphic m/f sex. Prequel to the "Tales of the Twilight Menshevik" series.
- These stories are in a genre (romance) that normally provokes a narrowing of focus, but in this case is only the starting point for a grand tour of the fascinating world that we should really be seeing in the comics. I sometimes find the romantic resolutions a little trite and overly neat, but this is a minor quibble.

Rogue 1/2: The Scent of a Mutant: By Jaelle and Orla. Archived by Pirat. Main Character Story.
In battle with Magneto and his Acolytes, Rogue accidentally falls into a pool at Jusenkyo. Sort of a Ranma 1/2 crossover. Humor.
- Light romantic comedy... not that there's anything wrong with that. The perfect antidote to the millions of "Rogue and Remy overcome the evil Joseph and get together" stories out there.
- Hilarious, references to Ranma 1/2 worked into writing quite well, just fun all around.
SFX: Opening Moves: By Abyss. Archived by Alara Rogers. Main Character.
A government-sponsored team of mutants goes after Magneto.
- A tense, surprising and clever thriller.
Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue by Tilman Stieve. Archived by Alykat. Not All Parts.
The wedding of Hank McCoy draws together mutants from all over the extended X-family. Magneto shows up to chat with Xavier while all the other guys are at Hank's bachelor party.
- These stories are in a genre (romance) that normally provokes a narrowing of focus, but in this case is only the starting point for a grand tour of the fascinating world that we should really be seeing in the comics. I sometimes find the romantic resolutions a little trite and overly neat, but this is a minor quibble.
Through The Valley of the Shadow: By Darqstar. Archived by Darqstar. Main Character Story.
A tale from the days when Magneto was headmaster of Xavier's School. Magneto and Wolverine discover a mutant being held captive in her parents' basement, and rescue her. That's when the real problems begin...
- The main character's mutant power is terrifying, but the story does not back off from the implications. The characterisation of nearly everyone is very satisfying and very right.
Transatlantic Crossing: by Dr. Benway. Archived by Luba Kmetyk. Main Character.
Benway's take on the first meeting of Magneto and Xavier.
- Two men in a hypocritical and monstrous world: an elegant story, so clear-sighted that it is cruel.
Gamma Ray:
Devil's Diary by Dark Mark. Archived by Alara Rogers. Main Character.
Magneto's journal in the months immediately preceding Cape Citadel.
- Mad and villainous Magneto from the heart of the insanity. Disturbing and unique.
- Very revealing look into the mind of a mad Magneto. Also, few stories written in this time period.
Kid Dynamo: By Connie Hirsch. Archived by Marty Blase. Main Character Story.
The classic New Mutants story, now available on the Web. Jessica Pierce, teenage telekinetic fireproof runaway, is rescued by Magneto and the New Mutants, and offered a place at the school. It would be a dream come true, except that Jessica hates Magneto and blames him for the death of her mother.
- Yes, I suppose it is a Mary Sue, but if only they were all this good! Classic New Mutants and a great adventure story.
- A classic, well-written, characterization of the New Mutants is great, introduction of an original character is handled well.
Shelter from the Storm by Sequoia Swennes. Archived by Alara Rogers. Main Character Story. Adult.
In the original Dark Phoenix storyline, Jean was supposed to have her powers removed by the Shi'ar. A followup story would have had Magneto offering her her powers back in exchange for her joining him. She would have refused him, of course. What if she didn't? Contains m/f sex.
- Sad, sexy and subtle. Some of the best and most intense character-based writing around.
